5. Understanding the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC)
Just what is CSEC? How about trafficking? We hear about it
all the time on the news but understanding it is difficult.
This course will leave you in no doubt as to what CSEC and
trafficking is. It will also leave you wondering how this is
happing right in your own city and neighborhoods.
This course covers all aspects of child sexual exploitation,
child trafficking and the resultant abuse of children who
are used for financial gain. These are the hidden, ignored
child sexual abuse victims in an industry that exists
because society chooses to ignore it.
There is a strong link between childhood sexual abuse and
CSEC. It is estimated by service providers that as many as
80-90% of prostituted youth were sexually and/or physically
abused in the home. Because of the abuse, a child may run
away or be thrown out of the home whereby he or she becomes
extremely vulnerable to exploitation in the streets. Among
children living on the streets, a third are lured into
prostitution within 48 hours of leaving home. Once they fall
into the hands of a pimp/trafficker, they are repeatedly
subject to various forms of psychological, physical and
sexual abuse as a means of breaking the will and extracting
obedience. They are also transported frequently from city to
city to further isolate the victims and meet client demand.
Escaping 'the life' proves incredibly difficult for most.
This is not something that just happens to just other
people's children in other socioeconomic groups. It can
happen to yours too. We recommend viewing the movie 'Taken'
with Liam Neeson which provides a very real example of how
easily it can occur.
