Pedophile’s lyrics used by Hewlett Packard advertising

campaign thwarted by Guardian ad Litem Volunteer

November 11, 2008. Palm Beach: Ms.Vicki Tucci, Director, Guardian ad Litem 15th Judicial Circuit, was pleasantly surprised last week to find that one of her volunteer Guardians had made the news; internationally.

Evin Daly, volunteer Guardian ad Litem, heads a child abuse prevention organization, Child AbuseWatch.net through which the public and professionals alike are educated about child abuse issues.

While watching television, Mr. Daly noticed a Hewlett Packard TouchSmart commercial using a familiar soundtrack “Do you wanna touch?” sung by Joan Jett. Mr. Daly was concerned that the soundtrack was originally composed and recorded by UK glam-rocker, Gary Glitter - a convicted pedophile and child sexual abuser who has been banned from 19 countries and has a bounty of 1 million pounds ($1.6m) on his head in Spain . He was thrown out of Cambodia and recently released from jail for child sex crimes in Thailand.

On October 14th, Child AbuseWatch contacted Hewlett Packard’s CEO Mark Hurd informing them of his concern and requesting that the commercial’s music be changed. HP didn’t change the music. In response to this refusal, Child AbuseWatch issued a press release to the wire services and the story ran around the world particularly in the UK where the media caused quite a storm.

Finally, on October 30th, HP pulled the commercial in international markets and changed the music in the US market.

The result? A pedophile won’t get his $160,000 royalty and an offensive soundtrack – offensive given the link with a child abuser “Do you wanna touch?” – was removed, thanks to the quick thinking of dedicated child advocate, Evin Daly.

Mr. Daly suggests Hewlett Packard give the royalty or equivalent check to the Guardian ad Litem Program whose volunteers and staff advocate for victims who have suffered abuse similar to that suffered by Glitter’s victims. Additionally, HP should issue a general apology for not checking the provenance of the soundtrack to begin with. Full details at www.abusewatch.net.

Ms. Tucci was pleased to see the Guardian ad Litem program mentioned in a number of articles that reached a national and international audience and mentioned as well as in interviews that Mr.Daly gave the press. Child AbuseWatch.net is a supporter of the Guardian ad Litem Program.

The Guardian ad Litem Program (www.galpbc.org) comprises staff and volunteers who represent neglected, abused and abandoned children's interests in court.
